E-Portfolio assessment

Well I have been on to PebblePad this morning and it appears that my hounding of students is having a positive effect - there are still two participants who have not posted assets to the Gateway but the assets that have been populated are very interesting - I think the webfolios will be rich in content so thats good!

I have been involved in a HEA bid on synthesising evidence based practice to dissmeninate good practice across the sector which has been really good and have reflected on my involvement in that and posted that to my asset store - so I am practicising what I preach and continuing to populate stuff so that I can create an e-portfolio as well....

Speaking of e-portfolios - I came across a really interesting link on the ELESIG website http://ncepr.org/ - national collation for electronic portfolio research. These are American studies but still have some relevance.

http://ncepr.org/connectionsJul08.pdf- has some stuff on PebblePad as an e-portfolio system and its uses.

Ok - well, might be a bit quiet on this front for a few weeks as I prepare for the torrent of assessents and marking over the next month or so!

Busy, Busy, Busy!

Ok - well I have sort of given up hounding students until the New year because I have so much stuff on - I dont know if its cause I work at 100mph but I have been a bit frustrated by the fact that students arent publishing stuff on an ongoing basis and am expecting that sometime before they start putting webfolios together there will be a flurry of activity - however, there are a few exceptions - namely Scott and Lisa who are publishing stuff incrementally..there are still some participants who have published nothing so far.

This week has been a significant week as I have submitted the module specification for the work based mobile module that I am designing for my PhD. The module will be offered across the Faculty and a cohort of students in Carnegie have already been identified to apply to do the module.

I have written the draft for the book chapter so am awaiting feedback on this as well - it has been really enjoyable to do and worthwhile as I have done an extensive literature review, conceptualised a model SLP (Situational Learner Pedgagogy) which I hope will be adopted by some practioners for work based mobile learning.

The ever-supportive Jayne Mothersdale has agreed that I can go on the next ALPs conference which falls on my birthday but nevermind - it will be really intesting... I am going to try and write a paper for the ALT journal and get some experience of being peer reviewed etc

PhD starts next month - unfortunately there has been crossed wires with my application form so I dont know who is supervising me or what is going to happen.

I have my PDP tomorrow and my CPD has to be submitted to ACCA soon! I am glad I am keeping an e-portfolio in PebblePad for myself. I have just spent 30 mins listening to a really interesting presentation on e-portfolios (see slideshow and videos relating to her project(s) in Aukland and Dubai on e-portfolios) http://www.slideshare.net/hazelowendmc/placeholder-2201865 - a lot of what Hazel Owen talked about is what I have tried to incorporate in my chapter and pedagogical underpinning to the module. However, she has made interesting cultural observations that may be a barrier to students choosing the module because of the personal e-portfolio and expectation that one is happy to talk about oneself. I am glad I have invited Dawn Leggott and Marie-Paul Sheard to be involved in the module design.

I am of course very tired and have put in a lot of additional hours this week - resource planning for this sort of thing is so difficult - I am glad it is another accountant's problem and not mine!

Alison Lowe, WBL and mobile technologies, briefing

Met with Alison today who is CEO of Touchstone a local charity and a member of Volition and more importantly, a lovely lady. She has indicated that there are lots of voluntary secotr organisations which would really benefit from students doing real work based projects for them and that these would suit multidiscplinary teams involved in business development, marketing, finance etc They have capacity to mentor student teams and currently take a lot of post graduate and undergraduate health students on the service sector side.

We discussed PUPPS and she was very interested in the use of web technologies to support students via social networks etc in a work based context - she said the Finance Director was desperate for help/assistance from accounting/finance students - there has been lots of encouragement about my proposed project from people involved in Employability.

I have submitted a bid to ELESIG (http://elesig.ning.com/) to fund the activity day - so I will be awaiting a decision sometime in December! I am trying to get the SCEPTrE wiki working which is frustrating and slow - I am really too busy to keep trying to resolve the issues but it is important..

I STILL havent sent the employer questionnaire out - time is making things really tough for me at the moment - I have written 2,800 words of the book chapter on WBL and mobile technologies (the research and theories on it are fascinating) but I have to write a proposal paper about the module that I am writing - I am so passionate about what I am doing but I have so much to do and am hoping that when I get some PhD hours this will free up some time so that I dont have to do so much out of work....my husband is getting annoyed as I have no work life balance at the moment and it is all work, work, work..

Anyway - hopefully I am going to create something of real value and worth for students at a time when employability is a big issue - I am really thinking about a CBI bid but I have so much on at the mo'!

Early morning blues - stress!

OK - so I went to bed early cause I was tired and I have woken up early because I am stressed - so what is stressing me? Lots of things to do with the project mainly - firstly, a participant has dropped out and not returned the PDA and despite my numerous communications, did not return it on Monday as promised and has not responded to subsequent emails - so I will have to write formally which I didnt want to have to do.

Secondly, despitre numerous requests for students to blog, send me an MP3 file and publish their assets to the Gateway - only x2 have published their assets, 4 have done a blog and 5 have sent me an MP3 file...I understand that participants have comittments but they have all agreed to take part in the pilot and whilst I appreciate things might not happen straightaway it has been well over a month now, so that is frustrating and stressful.

I was going to submit an HEA bid for some funds to do some work in relation to extending the project which is going to feed into a new module I am designing (it wil be interesting to see if particpants compliance changes if webfolios and the progression of populating assets is assessed). However, far more important people than I are going to submit a bid synthesising good practice in a collection of case studies, so I am not going to bother as I cant compete with the people involved. If it is approved the outputs will be helpful for my project but it is a bit disheartening as a new researcher to find constantly find a lack of opportunity in bidding for funds as you face competition from more experienced researchers...

I havent started my book chapter yet (eek) - the lack of assets being published and blogs is hindering this and I of course have a deadline to work to, so this is stressful for me.

On a less stressful (for now) note, Helen Whitrod Brown who is now involved in partnerships would like to meet next week to discuss the experiential learning module that I would like to write for business students and I informed that Barbara Colledge is working on something similar.

One thing I have learned this week, is that the ideas that I have had in terms of competency/skills framework, e-portfolio assessment, resuable learning objects for the proposed module etc are things that are happening in various projects across the University. The module I want to design is a synthesis of all of these things but I conceptualised the module before knowing any of this - so the work may not be as labour intensive in terms of set up as I imagined.

So this week - I still need to circulate the questionnaire I designed weeks ago to employers, find out some way of convincing participants to do the stuff I have asked - get participants to send the activity report from PebblePad showing what they have (or in most cases have not done) and start this book chapter so that I dont have a nervous breakdown in December trying to pull it all together - oh yes and I will have a mound of marking/assessing as Semester 1 exams are looming - oh the joy!

Right well, off to make a hot chocolate and get some shut eye if I can!

Participant drop out, employer questionnaires and sharing assets

We have a participant who has left the PUPPS project which is sad but not wholly unexpected if I am honest. I was upfront to potential participants that there is some work involved being in the pilot but that it would be worth it in terms of providing information for assessments, linked with the placement and PACE.

So, the problem that I am faced with is finding a replacement...I think I will approach a graduate trainee involved in Becky's project as they will be familar with PebblePad and only PDA training will be required.

I definitely want to circulate the employer questionnaire today and have yet to receive an MP3 file from x2 participants - we are getting there slowly!!!

Next thing is to get activity reports from each participant, although I may just be able to use information from the Gateway..this will only provide data in relation to published assets not ones created - think I will speak to Junjie about this!

So - still waiting for 4 students to publish/share their assets with me but the ones I have seen so far are very intersting...

OK well I am outta here - so much to do (as usual!)

sharing assets - PebblePad

Hi all

As you will all be aware from the PUPPS launch and PUPPS pack - one of the important features of the project is creating a body of evidence of experience through reflective learning. In order to support members of the project and for my research work, I have suggested previously that we should share the assets that have been created by you with the rest of the group, so that people can learn from each other.

You must share all assets with me (as agreed) but you do not have to share all assets with other participants of the project just those you want to.

Attached is a link to a file for instructions on sharing your assets - please do so asap, so that I can view what you have been doing - Suffice to say, this should be an ongoing process now until the creation of your webfolios in June!

Meeting with Becky Baldaro-Booth

So I met with the lovely Becky today and we ran through what has been going on in terms of both of our projects. I think we are going to have some rich data to analyse! Becky has kindly informed me that students can share assets before they publish them - so I am going to get some instructions and post them on the PUPPS facebook wall. This is great as it means that I do not have to wait until the end to see what students are populating in PebblePad. It also means another message for some students to ignore!!!!

It will be very interesting to see what is being created and whether the PDA is adding value to when and where students are reflecting and the evidence that is being populated using the PDA.

Thinking longer term - it is apparent to me just how engaged I need to be with employers moving forward and we have some really good employer networks that i should tap into! Becky has suggested someone in social media who might be a judge for the webfolio competition which would be great.

I am reminded that I need to chase up some dates with the ALPS team to get some support and access to the PDAs for the focus group sessions.

I have come across another brilliant presentation on mobile technologies

ALT-C 2009 web site at http://altc2009.alt.ac.uk/posts/6563972.

Am currently writing my PGCHE portfolio so to suffice to say - uber busy as usual!!!!!

Monday 26 October 2009

Still waiting for stuff, no time like the present and just no time!

Well, I have started ringing round the participants this week as there are a few students who I have not heard from for a while and whilst I dont want to prescribe how ofen people should be populating content via PebblePad PDA, I want to ensure that everyone is clued up to what they should be doing and has access to everythin that they need...

I am really pleased that some students have started populating assets in PebblePad and seem really switched on in terms of the social networking and creation of their e-portfolio...

I have a meeting with BBB who is overseeing a project with graduate trainees who are creating portfolios using PebblePad but not using PebblePad PDA to do so. I am going to see if we can do some comparative analysis between what is being populated by students involved in PUPPS and those on her project.

I have been in discussions with marketing about getting a respected member of the business community or a local employer to be the judge on the webfolio competition - I know that these things will take a while to get sorted, so I am getting the ball rolling on that now..

Questionnaires are being checked by Junjie tomorrow before they are sent around to employers - still waiting on MP3 or WAV files from participants - have received content from Scott and Lisa but that it is!!! I am chasing the other participants so I should get some files from them soon!

Thursday 22 October 2009

MP3 file issues

Well, I have asked the students to answer the research questions by sending me an audio file recorded on their loaned PDAs...

One dutiful participant noticed that the audio notes program that had been installed was a trial and the free trial has now expired!

Students have been asked to install"Kepp Recordin" which recordes WAP files rather than MP3 fiels but the important thing is that they can still create audio reflections and upload them to PebblePad http://www.axyzmobile.com/products/keep-recordin

I have been hugely busy and havent written the employer questionnaire yet - I will do these over the weekend!

Soo much to doooooo......

PUPPS Training....not enough time!

Well - I feel like I am badgering some of the students but I am a bit concerned about a few students - I have sent emails are TWO students have not responded at all and had no training......All other students are engaged and cracking on with things and I believe that we are going to see some good webfolios.

I am starting to think about data that I need for the book chapter and am expecting some MP3 files from students which will be sent via email and I will be circulating a questionnaire to all employers next week! (eek - better start writing it soon!)

There has been less activity from me as I have been unwell and uber busy - but am trying to pick things up again....I am going to finish some assets this week and reflect on them.. I also have to think about updating my CV and thinking about my profile for work!

I am currently thinking about the focus day (s) - I am thinking of hosting one before christmas as I think that students should meet again before next year.

Lots and lots to do - where will I find the time to do everything?

Well - just because I dont have enought to do already!

I am hoping to get invited to a workshop in Nottingham on mobile technologies

http://www.alt.ac.uk/workshop_detail.php?e=339. - would be really good to learn from others and try and disseminate intital findings from the PUPPS project

There's some really interesting stuff here on mobile technologies - I really want to try and get involved in these networks but it is finding the time to do everything that is the real challenge

http://hheckl.ning.com/

I am meeting with a Kirsten Thompson at Leeds University to discuss student-centred virtual learning environment design which I believe will help with the on-going development of the project and the PhD that I am starting in January 2010!

Frustration!!!

Despite my numerous requests - I find myself in the situation where some participants have still not joined this blog or indeed commented/posted to it and I find no existence of their own personal blog - access to my blog to be fair is optional but only a few students have followed this blog and have seemingley set up a blog of their own.

However, participants are using FACEBOOK regularly as a means of communication, information sharing and support which is great - the online network is definitely working in this sense.

Some students have being creating assets in PebblePad using PebblePad PDA and some students have accessed their PebblePad accounts using their PC to test whether their accounts worked - I will be interested to see where assets have been created. I am concered that one student has not attended the training and has not seemingly logged into PebblePad and the pilot has been running for a few weeks now, so though engagement is not a problem across the board - their has been little engagement from this student.

We have been experiencing problems with campus pack which is the private journal application - this can be accessed easily on a PC but the interface does not work well on a PDA - this is a continued area of review.

Finally - we have lost a student due to a change in employment circumstances which is a real shame.

This week I am going onto the PUPPS Gateway to review assets that have been created so far - better post the asset I created after the training to my account tonight!

PUPPS training - PebblePad PDA

Just finished a training session with Scott - who was the only person with the exception of apologies from Lisa Walker and Michael - who is attending tomorrow. This is a real shame as I am not convinced that everyone has connected to PebblePad PDA.

Didnt record the session today as I will do tomorrow and can embed the link here tomorrow

Training was successful - we got Scott onto PebblePad PDA which is great, he has seen the blog here online, Facebook mobile is installed and on - he has tested Skype - which worked but echoed - I have suggested using some headphones to combat this problem.

Scott has even created some assets which is great! I am sure he is going to create a great webfolio.

I am hoping all other participants are going to get involved to the same degree and join the session tomorrow!

I am hopefully going to have some photos and footage to post here tomorrow!

Thanks for attending Scott!

PebblePad PDA is working!

After a couple of really hectic weeks getting the units installed with all the programs needed for the project; skype, facebook mobile, audio notes as well as synchronising them - we have finally got everyone to log on to PebblePad mobile - 1 user has problems logging in. I tested PebblePad PDA yesterday and it works - I am running an Elluminate session on Thursday and Friday which I will record and take photos of - reflect on and upload to PebblePad to my asset store to include in my webfolio of the project (seeing as I forgot to evidence my last effort - doh!) - by the end of the session -all users should be able to access both PebblePad mobile and PebblePad PDA on their PDA units.

I am pleased with the progression of the project in the last few days and am hoping all problems with logins etc will be resolved by Friday.

Mike Heckman from computing services has been a major lifeline of the project and I couldnt have got so far without his technical help.

Students should be posting blogs here about the project and also have a private journal account with campus pack which is proving to be a nightmare - so that is number 1 on the list to get sorted but it is a busy time of year with all the fresh faced and in some cases loan laden (boo the disorganised loans company) all happily skipping through the congested aisles of the University to their classes for the new academic year!

Its going to be a hectic few weeks but thoroughly worth it!

PUPPS training session 28.09.09

Held the first training session via Elluminate today - three students joined the session and I think it went fairly well - however, I forgot to create some evidence of the session to upload with my reflection using PebblePad - doh!

I have circulated the link to the PUPPS network and hope to be joined by some friends soon - this way each of us will be able to post, make comments - give recommendations etc

Things are starting to get off the ground BUT there still seems to be connection problems with the PDAs etc- I am hoping that all participants will have all accounts set up and connection problems resolved over the next few days!

I found this image which I think conceptualises what I am trying to do on the PUPPS project - I want to use mobile technologies to capture learning experiences and record evidence of these experiences, but importantly student reflect on the experiences.

OK - off to watch Match of the Day 2 - tense in the house - husband is caught up in the cricket - hope England win or he will be unbearable!
